So where is Okinawa? Where is Miyako?

Miyako Island is in Okinawa Prefecture, and that is in Japan! But the easiest way to find Miyako Island is to find Taipei or Quanzhou and look east. Or south-east from Shanghai, or south from Jeju Island in South Korea. We are 2,000km to the south-west of Tokyo, which is 3 hours by airplane on a direct flight from Haneda or Narita Airports.

Naha City, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture is about 300km to the north-east of Miyako and it takes 45 minutes by plane. Nowadays, there are no passenger ferries connecting the island to the outside world - coming by air or a private ship is the only way to get here.
